About Belize

Located on the eastern coast of Central America, Belize is bordered by Guatemala, Mexico and the Caribbean. Although Spanish and Belizean Creole are commonly spoken, its official language is English. Belize has a population of about 340,844, making it the country with the lowest population density in Central America. Known for its diverse ecosystems as well as its large number of aquatic and land animal species, Belize is also made up of a variety of cultures and languages because of its rich history. The country gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1981 and has strong connections with both the Caribbean and Latin American regions. It is the only country that holds full membership in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) as well as the Central American Integration System (SICA).

Institutions of Higher Education

Belize contains about five schools that offer tertiary level education, with the largest being the University of Belize. These institutions offer associate, bachelor and graduate degrees for those wishing to study business in Belize.

Academic Year in Belize

The school year generally starts in September and continues through the end of June. Students have breaks at Christmas and Easter as well as a summer holiday that lasts about nine or ten weeks. Post-secondary institutions will usually divide the academic year into two semesters and may offer a third program during the summer that is equivalent to a semester.

Program Duration and Cost of Tuition

The length it takes to earn a degree in Belize can vary depending on the school, the program and whether or not the student chooses to take classes during the summer. Associate’s degrees generally take two years, with about another two years added on to earn a bachelor’s and approximately an additional two years to earn a master’s.
