We are approaching the end of the first quarter of the 21st century. During this time, conflicts and natural disasters symbolized by the terrorist attacks in the United States in 2001 and the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 have continued to occur. Now we are facing the enormous challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has thrown our society into turmoil. On the other hand, there are great expectations for rapidly advancing science and technology as a driving force for the development of a sustainable society. Accordingly, in the course of social reform, a major review of the mission of universities has come to be required. Niigata University aims to be needed and to continue shining even more in the turbulent society of the 21st century. To that end, we will always think about what we can do as a national university in Japan, take action, and contribute to fostering individuals of the next generation and to the development of science as well as to society based on predictions of the future. This Niigata University Vision 2030 returns to the basics of Niigata University and shows various stakeholders what the future of Niigata University should be. In this vision, we regard the year 2030 as the immediate future, as it is the deadline for the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). Setting "Becoming a front-runner of future life innovation" as the mission that Niigata University is to accomplish toward the society of the future, we will gather the knowledge of Niigata University as a comprehensive university in order to enrich human activities on the earth. Our Undergraduate School now has six Faculties (Rehabilitation Sciences, Medical Technologies, Health Sciences, Nursing, Social Welfare, and Healthcare Management) and 13 Departments. The total number of students is about 4,500 and they are taking a wide variety of courses in these Departments. The Graduate School was opened in 2005, and now has four master’s courses with majors in Medical and Rehabilitation Sciences (Master of Medical Science / Rehabilitation Science), Health Sciences (Master of Health Science / Science in Nursing), Social Welfare (Master of Social Work), and Health Informatics and Business Administration (Master of Health Informatics and Business Administration). In addition, the Graduate School has one doctoral course with a major in Health and Welfare (Doctor of Health Science). As of July 1, 2020, there are 98 students in the master’s courses and 52 in the doctoral course. Our faculty members and staff have been making enormous efforts as “One Team” in “One Campus” to foster effective QOL supporters. To this end, a great emphasis has been placed on Interprofessional Education (IPE) in the university curriculum since its foundation because IPE is regarded as the most effective way to have the students learn team approach beyond borders among Departments. We would like to encourage students with scientific interests in professional health care to participate in actual fields of health care as “effective QOL supporters” in the future. We have been promoting worldwide collaborative research with professionals abroad, especially with those of Asian countries. The origin of founding NIIT was based on the strong will of Niigata-based companies for establishing an educational institution by themselves where they could foster talented engineers in Niigata through on-the-job training. Their determination eventually formed an alliance of the institute foundation, and the fund was raised widely from public to private, including Kashiwazaki and most other cities, towns, and villages in Niigata prefecture. The number of supporting companies reached more than 500. Thus NIIT was founded by the great enthusiasm of the alliance companies, local government, and many citizens of Niigata. Menos información
